Wild Garden Hummus Dip launches new vending machine package

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE...................................................................................................Mark Smith
June 26, 2009..............................................................................................................708-222-8330 ext 319

Wild Garden unveils new Hummus product for vending machines, schools

Chicago – Wild Garden of Chicago unveils a new vending machine-sized Hummus snack-pack this week at the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) Fancy Food Show in New York.

Wild Garden Hummus Dip is one of the nation’s most popular choices for shelf-stable, healthy and great tasting hummus, a Mediterranean dip that is growing in popularity across America.

Wild Garden Hummus Dip is distributed through thousands of mainstream retailers and also ethnic specialty stores across America and in Canada, driven by consumer demand for great tasting vegan vegetarian and healthy based food products.

“Hummus is extremely healthy. It is glutton-free, high in soluble fiber which is very difficult to get in many foods. It is made from the Legume or garbanzo beans [chick peas] which are very high in fibers -- and a source of protein. Wild Garden Hummus Dip is low fat, cholesterol-free and truly Vegan vegetarian,” explained Wild Garden Vice President Mark Smith.

“We have sold Wild Garden Hummus Dip in eight varieties of flavors in a 13.4 ounce jar through retailers across North America and we have also placed a smaller-portion product in Airlines such as United, Alaska and Delta for passengers who are demanding healthy food choices.”

Smith said making Hummus “shelf-stable” through pasteurization has allowed the popular food item to leave the deli and frozen food section in stores and to go right on the store shelves competing with other popular dips.

“Shelf-stable means we have made hummus portable without the fear of spoilage. It is portable, more affordable because it does not require refrigeration until it is opened. We have made it convenient and affordable and it fits the needs of consumers in a way that grocers and food marketers are seeking,” Smith explained.

“It is the perfect size for vending machines, school lunchrooms, deli counters, fast food, restaurants, businesses of all kinds and even fits in mom’s purse when she wants to snack or give her children a healthy snack choice that they will enjoy.”

The new Wild Garden Hummus Dip vending machine package includes: 2 crackers with sesame seeds (13 grams, 35 calories) and Hummus Dip in a 1.76 ounce tetra–pack (56 grams, 63 calories).

“It is basically a meal substitute-snack on the run that is 98 calories. It is very healthy. Vegan vegetarian, very filling and it has a great taste that comes from its authentic Mediterranean recipe,” Smith said.

“There is a real demand for healthier snacks. It is real. It is not a fad any more. People are trying to find ways to cut calories and fat grams from their diets and they know the easiest way to do that is to snack more healthy. This satisfies that need consumers have. All of the retailers at the fancy Food Show are looking for this exact product. This is a lifestyle now, not a fading trend. We’re proud to showcase it.”

Wild Garden, a subsidiary of Ziyad Brothers Importing of Cicero, Illinois, will showcase the new product among many of their popular products and brands at the NASFT Fancy Food Show in New York at Booth 4810.

For more information, visit the Wild Garden Hummus Dip web site at www.WildGarden.biz.

FIRE Judge John J. Fleming and jail Anthony Abbate immediately

Nothing is more disgusting in Chicago than the lack of justice

By Ray Hanania

Had Anthony Abbate been Black, he would have had the book thrown at him. But Anthony Abbate is an arrogant fat pig of a Chicago cop who was caught on tape in a drunken stuper beating the crap out of a young female bartender. I don’t mean “fat” as just some kind of pejorative adjective, although that certainly hangs easily around Abbate’s dirt bag neck.

At 250 pounds, he’s overweight and that only added to the disgusting video scene as he pummeled, pounded, beat, kicked and dragged mercilessly the 125-pound Karolina Obrycka as she tended bar where she was working in February 2007 and where Abbate was drinking himself into an alcoholic stupor.

What provoked Abbate. Turns out he was beating up people at the bar before he turned his fat fists on Obrycka. But when she refused to serve him more drinks because of his conduct and the disturbance he had caused, fat dirt-bag cop Anthony Abbate turned himself into the poster child for everything ugly about the Chicago Police Department and the hypocrisy that protects those who embrace corruption and misconduct regularly.

Sure enough, leave it to a judgment bankrupt and ethically questioned Cook County Circuit Court Judge like John J. Fleming to find a flimsy excuse to justify giving Abbate leniency. Fleming comes from the same culture of corruption that produces cops like Abbate.

A 12-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Abbate was off-duty during the altercation but that is baloney. No cops are ever off-duty. They’re always working. They always have the responsibility to step up in any circumstance and throw their weight around.

What is so disturbing about the fat dirt-bag cop Anthony Abbate isn’t the circumstances of this morally corrupt situation, but the silence of the thousands of good Chicago cops and suburban cops, too, who deep down sympathized with Abbate and their stupid “code of silence.”

Abbate, to many of them, was a hero because Obrycka, who has a heavy accent, has been labeled and slandered and defamed on cop-talk blogs and in the halls of police station gossip as an undocumented, illegal alien who can barely speak English.

Instead of throwing that fat dirt-bag cop in to jail, Cook County Circuit Judge John Fleming gave the 40-year-old Anthony Abbate, a slap on the hand: home curfew of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 130 hours of “community service.”

Who is this Fleming? Here’s his bio from one of those legal web sites:

Legal Experience: 1980-83, assistant general attorney, Chicago Park District (in house counsel); 1983-91, assistant state's attorney, Cook County (traffic 4th Municipal District and Felony Trial Divisions); 1991-94, deputy general attorney, Chicago Park District (supervise the Litigation Division); 1994-1995, ALJ, City of Chicago (Personnel and Parking departments); 1996-1996, Director of Administrative Adjudication, City of Chicago.

Judicial Experience: Judge Fleming was first elected to the bench in November of 1996. He was originally assigned to the 1st Municipal District of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He served in Traffic Court, Domestic Violence and Misdemeanor sections. He is currently assigned to Felony preliminary hearings and Central Bond Court at the Criminal Courts Building.

He has the “culture of corruption” stamp padded all over him.

Fleming, naturally defended his kindered colleague in this state’s rampant culture of corruption, asserting that he didn't see any “aggravating factors” to justify a prison term. Fleming incredulously argued that Abbate did not “seriously injure” the Obrycka, the hero in this sad Chicago saga.

Abbate beat the woman for nearly a half hour! What do you think Fleming would have done if the victim had been his child?

And, Fleming insisted after allowing this trial to be delayed two full years – something judges do when they want to help reduce the burden on the criminals they favor – that Abbate had a “clean record before the incident,” and that he had underwent “alcohol rehab and has not had a relapse” since entering the program.

Is it because Abbate’s past conduct has not been captured on tape as it was that night in that Chicago bar? Had it not been for the bar’s video tape system, Abbate would have gotten off without the worthless conviction handed down in Fleming’s unjust courtroom.

“If I believed sentencing Anthony Abbate to prison would stop people from getting drunk and hitting people, I'd give him the maximum sentence,” Fleming said.

Are you kidding me?

The only thing more disgusting about Abbate’s being given a pass is the moral bankruptcy of Judge Fleming’s ruling.

Fleming is a Circuit Court Judge. He was “first elected” to the bench in 1996. That means he can be removed from the bench. And, he should be removed as soon as possible.

Finally, every decent American citizen in the realm of this injustice by Fleming and Abbate has to ask out loud, Where are the voices of disgust from the Chicago Police Department and police departments throughout? Their silence is deafening and just as shameful, too.

Radogno, Senate GOP Caucus Push Temporary Budget Solution

SPRINGFIELD -- While continuing to push for structural reforms in Illinois government, Senate Republicans today offered a “bridge” solution to the state’s budget crisis which funds all of state government – without a tax increase – and avoids the devastating human service budget cuts that Democrats approved last month.

Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno recommended temporarily spending at the previous fiscal year level until responsible cuts can be made and reforms can be put in place. The Republican leader raised the proposal in the latest meeting with Governor Quinn and legislative leaders. But the Democrat leaders adjourned the session abruptly on Wednesday.

“It’s unfortunate that they chose to adjourn the special session this week and leave town without addressing the fiscal crisis before us,” Radogno said. “It’s inhumane to leave Illinois families twisting in the wind like this.

“We are prepared to support a bridge plan that allows state government to continue to function and ensures that those in need of social service programs don’t fall through the cracks,” Leader Radogno said. “It is only a temporary solution. But it does allow us the opportunity to work toward the real ethics, government and fiscal reforms that are critical for a permanent solution. It’s work that should have been done months ago.”

Radogno said, “The Democrat majorities made a choice to cut funding for the programs and providers that serve our most vulnerable populations. It was done, quite simply, to generate a backlash and create pressure to pass an increase in the state income tax.”

Radogno said the plan worked -- to a point. “Their budget created the panic they were perhaps hoping for, but did nothing to advance a responsible solution or address the underlying problems facing Illinois government. With a temporary budget at the Fiscal Year 08 levels, we have an opportunity to get the job done right.”

Radogno continued her call for key reforms to the structure of state government, including: genuine campaign finance reform, redistricting and others proposed by the Collin’s Commission; reigning in state spending and implementing fiscal reforms to prevent overspending; adopting reforms to control skyrocketing Medicaid costs and improve quality of care; and permanent solutions to the current funding crisis facing the state’s public pension system.

Radogno plans to raise the issue again with legislative leaders and Governor Pat Quinn, although no meeting is scheduled until June 30, one day before the start of Fiscal Year 10.

DesPlaines City senior staff to forego pay increase in 2009

CITY’S SENIOR STAFF VOLUNTARILY FOREGO PAY INCREASE

for immediate release

In a recent letter to Des Plaines City Manager Jason Bajor, the City’s Department Heads/Senior Staff voluntarily agreed to forego a pay increase in 2009, based on the “downturn of the national and local economy” and its impact on the local financial situation.

The twelve Senior Staff members met independently to discuss the issue, following the public announcement by City Manager Jason Bajor that he would not be accepting a pay increase this year. The decision was unanimous amongst the group.

The signed letter, supporting the efforts of the City Manager Jason Bajor, states, “We appreciate the leadership you [Jason Bajor] displayed in being one of the first municipal leaders in the area to publicly state that you would not be accepting a pay increase this year. You were clear in not compelling your Department Head/Senior Staff group to do the same. On the contrary, you suggested it would be best for the Department Heads to meet as a group and decide for themselves how best to proceed…. We are pleased to join you in providing a leadership response to the City’s financial challenges by foregoing a pay increase due in 2009.” #

CLERK DOROTHY BROWN ANNOUNCES: MORE THAN $18 MILLION available for some INDIVIDUALS WHO LOST PROPERTIES TO FORECLOSURES IN COOK COUNTY

Clerk's Office Sets Up Online Portal for Confidential Access

to Mortgage Surplus Funds List

Chicago (TODAY) -The Honorable Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, says that her Office has "the silver lining to the dark cloud of mortgage foreclosure crisis" in the form of millions of dollars available for individuals through Mortgage Foreclosure Surpluses.

"The mortgage foreclosure epidemic of recent years has been devastating," said Clerk Brown, "However, I am eager to inform people who lost their homes to foreclosures in Cook County that some of them have thousands of dollars being held for them."

The Clerk's Office is currently holding approximately $18 million in Mortgage Foreclosure Surplus Funds, comprised of various amounts, which are due to just over 1,900 people. A Mortgage Foreclosure Surplus is the profit owed to an individual who foreclosed on a home that was subsequently sold at a dollar amount over what was owed to the bank at the time of foreclosure. With cases dating back to the 1990's, the Clerk's Office has compiled the names of individuals who have surpluses owed to them as high as $460,000.

Clerk Brown is launching an outreach campaign and hosting an online search engine, "Mortgage Surplus Search," on the Clerk's Office Web site (www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org) in an effort to locate the people in Cook County who are owed these Mortgage Surplus Funds. The search engine will allow citizens to enter their first initial and last name to see if they are on the surplus list. If an initial match is made, additional screens open up with directions to the court forms necessary to file a motion, petition for the turnover of the surplus funds, and file an appearance with the presiding judge. Also at the portal are answers to frequently asked questions about obtaining a mortgage surplus.

"In the midst of our nation's current economic crisis, some people who have lost their homes have financial windfalls being held for them, and I want to inform them about how to obtain the money," said Clerk Brown.

Interested persons may also visit the Accounting Department of the Circuit Court Clerk's Office to obtain information about the Mortgage Surplus Funds.

Photo caption: Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, revealed a surge in mortgage foreclosures in Cook County in March 2009. Today, she announces that there is more than $18 million available to some people who lost their homes to foreclosure and these individuals can find out if they have a mortgage surplus due to them by searching for their names on the Clerk's Office Web site.

Gorman sponsors resolution calling on Flowers to resign as Regional Supt. of Schools

Cook County Commissioner Elizabeth "Liz" Doody Gorman Sponsors Resolution Calling on Regional Superintendent of Schools, Charles Flowers, to Resign Immediately

June 17, 2009 - The Cook County Board voted unanimously yesterday to approve a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Liz Gorman (R-17), to call on Suburban Cook County Regional Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Flower to resign immediately. The resolution also calls on the Illinois Attorney General and the Cook County State's Attorney to launch criminal investigations into Flowers' office.

“At the very least Mr. Flowers has betrayed the public trust through his extremely poor management and gross negligence in not performing the duties for which he took an oath to faithfully discharge.” Gorman said. “Unfortunately, the students and faculty of the school districts he is charged with serving have suffered greatly under his extraordinary lack of leadership and service. It’s shameful the way he has padded the payroll with his relatives and friends and brought the office to its knees.” Gorman added. “Holding elective office is a privilege that should never be treated this way.”

As you recall, Commissioner Gorman was the lone NO vote on the County Board when Flowers sought a loan to help pay his expenses. “When he came to us for a loan to pay his expenses, I opposed it because I predicted that he would not be able to repay this loan because of the way he was running this office. His misuse of taxpayer funds is shocking. He needs to go now.” Gorman said.

Orland Park announces its Independence Day celebrations

Orland Park To Host Two Day Independence Spectacular

Scenic Centennial Park Offers Backdrop for America’s Birthday Bash

ORLAND PARK, ILLINOIS – The Village of Orland Park has planned two action packed days saluting America’s birthday. The village’s Recreation Department oversees the community’s festivities each year, offering a wealth of activities to celebrate Independence Day.

“Independence Day celebrations in Orland Park go back decades,” said Orland Park Village Trustee Brad O’Halloran, chair of the village’s Recreation and Parks Committee. “Longtime residents may remember when the firemen would set up their display near 151st Street and 94th Avenue, before the malls were built. The firemen would walk along the street, collecting donations from the audience to help pay for the display,” he added.

“In the 1980s, the village had manual fireworks at the John Humphrey Complex with people showing up at 8:30 p.m. to see the fireworks and then going home. Now, families plan their July 4th parties around the village’s two day Independence Spectacular,” said Orland Park Recreation Supervisor Stephanie Simpson, who is overseeing the event for the village.

Orland Park’s Independence Spectacular is held at Centennial Park, 15600 West (100th ) Avenue.

The celebration begins at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 3rd with kids’ rides offered until 10:00 p.m. Families who pre-registered for overnight tent camping may begin checking in at 5:00 p.m. The Pet Parade kicks off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the 6:30 p.m. Bike Parade, both of which are free but require pre-registration at one of the village’s recreation facilities.

The main stage will feature “OP Extravanganza” beginning at 6:00 p.m. with Family Crazy Bingo/Raffle also at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Liberty Family Fun Run/Walk at 7:00 p.m. An evening swim at the Centennial Park Aquatic Center will be available from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and normal admission fees apply. “An American Tale” is the featured fare at 9:15 p.m. for Movie on the Lawn, followed by “Field of Dreams” beginning at 11:00 p.m.

Guns & Hoses Softball Game

A longstanding friendly feud will continue on Friday, July 3rd when representatives from the Orland Fire Protection District defend their 2008 victory against their counterparts from the Orland Park Police Department. The annual Guns and Hoses Softball Game will begin at 7:00 p.m.

“We brought this event back a few years ago, having heard about the games between fire and police from years past,” said Orland Park Athletic Supervisor Kurt Heinlen who oversees the annual contest.

“We’ve had a great response from both the fire district and the police department and everyone has a great time at the game,” he added.

“We have a really good working relationship with the Police Department and the annual softball game gives us a chance to come together for some fun during the July 4th holiday,” said Orland Firefighter/Paramedic Tom Rafferty who plays in the game each year.

Orland Park Police offer summer programs to raise awareness for kids safety

Orland Park Police Announce Summer Schedule of Events

“Roll Call in the Park” Added To Summer Line Up

ORLAND PARK, ILLINOIS - The summer months offer the Orland Park Police Department many opportunities to meet the public it serves.

“Our summer events are designed so police personnel can meet with residents and discuss any concerns they may have,” said Orland Park Police Chief Tim McCarthy. “These programs also enable us to explain how the Orland Park Police Department functions,” the chief added.

“Each summer, the department hosts Trailers in the Park, when we bring out equipment, give aways and public safety materials so residents can learn more about our many programs,” said Investigator Dawn Gorman-Kenny, of the Community Policing Unit.

Trailers in the Park will be held June 19 at Doogan Park; July 17 at Heritage Park and August 14 at Marley Park. Police personnel will staff each park beginning at 1:00 p.m. and will cook hot dogs for visitors at approximately 5:00 p.m.

New to the Police Department’s summer line up this year will be “Roll Call in the Park,” during which police personnel will gather for their shift roll call at different parks throughout the summer.

“Typically, it’s the afternoon shift that begins at 2:35 p.m.,” McCarthy said. “The public is invited to observe the roll call and meet the officers for a few minutes before they go on patrol,” he added. Exact times and dates will be announced within the next few weeks through the local media, the village’s Code Red System and with signage at the selected parks.

“Holding roll call in the village parks is yet another example of the Police Department bringing its personnel into the neighborhoods so the residents can meet and talk with the men and women who serve our community,” said Trustee Patricia Gira, chair of the village’s Public Safety Committee.

“It’s nice for both the police officers and the residents to meet in a non-stressful setting and for the community to know about the many services offered by the Police Department,” she added.

During the Village of Orland Park’s Independence Spectacular at Centennial Park, the Police Department will be a part of the Friday, July 3rd Kids’ Day activities.

One of the department’s largest events is its annual National Night Out Celebration, planned for August 4 of this year. Held in the evening at the Village Center, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Orland Park’s National Night Out Celebration has won national honors.

“The department brings in other agencies and public safety organizations and the community gets to know more about these groups in a fun-filled, informative atmosphere,” Gira said.

“We invite residents to turn on their outside house lights as a statement against crime and then come up to the Village Center for the festivities,” McCarthy said.

The Orland Park Police Department will participate in the Taste of Orland Park July 31, August 1 and 2. “We’ll be a part of Saturday’s kids’ activities,” Gorman-Kenny said. On Saturday, August 1, the department’s Canine Unit will conduct a demonstration at the John Humphrey Sports Complex at 1:30 p.m. Also during Kids’ Day, parents and guardians will be able to obtain free Kid Care I.D. passport booklets with their child’s photograph, an important tool in helping to find missing children.

On Sunday, August 23, the department will host its annual Police Ride for the Illinois Special Olympics. A 14.4 mile bicycling fundraiser, the ride begins and ends at Paddy B’s in Old Orland. The ride is open to those ages twelve and older. Further information is available by calling the Orland Park Police Department’s non-emergency number, 708/349-4111.

McCarthy said, “With each of our events, there are usually a few laughs, a great exchange of information and a better understanding of how we can all work together to keep Orland Park and its residents as safe as we possibly can.”

Orland announces summer entertainment series

Village of Orland Park Announces Summer Entertainment Series Line Up

Free Concerts & Children’s Shows Slated for Outdoor Amphitheater

ORLAND PARK, ILLINOIS – The Village of Orland Park will mark its 24th Anniversary Season of summer shows when the 2009 Summer Entertainment Series begins June 14.

First held in 1985, the Sunday evening fare brought families to Orland Park’s Doogan Park where they barbecued and enjoyed live entertainment.

The 1989 debut of the award-winning Orland Park Village Center Complex moved the village’s entertainment series to the Outdoor Amphitheater, a coliseum-like theater that extends into the pond of the Village Center. Wednesday morning children’s shows were added with the new venue.

Orland Park’s Summer Entertainment Series is the longest running outdoor recreation program that the village offers,” said Orland Park Recreation Director Nancy Flores. “Each year, it continues to draw hundreds of people to every show,” she added.

Village of Orland Park Recreation Program Supervisor Stephanie Simpson oversees the free Summer Entertainment Series.

“Corporate sponsors help make this program possible,” Simpson said, adding that a number of area businesses sponsor a performance each year. Along with the Village of Orland Park, main sponsors of the series include the Daily Southtown and Star Newspapers and the Aileen S. Andrew Foundation.

Simpson begins to plan Orland Park’s series in November, visiting trade shows that feature Chicago area talent.

“Each year, we offer as much variety as possible so that we please as many tastes as possible,” she said.

All events are held at the Village of Orland Park Outdoor Amphitheater, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue, unless otherwise noted.

The Village of Orland Park operates an Inclement Weather Hotline to notify residents of the status of outdoor activities in the community. To find out if an outdoor event is canceled or if the location has changed, residents may call the pre-recorded hotline at 708/403-6290.
