Proud to receive my 4th Peter Lisagor Award for "In-Depth" reporting from the Society of Professional Journalist's Chicago Headline Club

Bookmark and Share

I won a Society of Professional Journalism Lisagor Award for a series I did on an American Arab Grocer who claimed he was the victim of anti-Arab bias by the suburban village where his store is located. Had I not written the story, no one in the Chicagoland media would have “wasted” their time covering the complaint. No one would listen to him and for a year, he was being harassed. When I started writing the story, I discovered in fact he was targeted by village inspectors who he said and I believe were trying to shut him down. They arrested him and his wife and son in August 2009 after receiving a complaint that he was “storing” food (that was canned) in a vacant store next to his own. The 911 tapes of police showed – after weeks of trying to get them – that the police had targeted him for being “Arab” – they said they were going to “shut down” an “Arab store owner.”

The Lisagor Awards are the highest honors you can receive from a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The Chicago Headline Club is the largest US Chapter. They were awarded last Friday April 23. This is my 4th Lisagor; I received three others for column writing. This one was awarded for In-Depth Reporting.

My awards include:

1984, Lisagor Award for Column Writing, Daily Southtown
2002, Lisagor Award for Column Writing, Arlington Heights Daily Herald
2004, Lisagor Award for Column Writing, Southwest News-Herald
2009, Lisagor Award for In-Depth Reporting, Southwest News-Herald
2006, Best Ethnic Columnist in America, New America Media
2009, Mehdi Courage in Journalism Award, the Mehdi Family

I have one more award that will be announced next week.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Thanks so much

Remarks of President Barack Obama – As Prepared for Delivery
Wall Street Reform Rally
Quincy, Illinois
April 28, 2010

As Prepared for Delivery—

Hello, Illinois!  It is good to be home.  I miss you guys.  As much as I love being your President, one of the toughest parts is that I don’t get to come home as much anymore and visit with you like I used to.  As you may have noticed, it tends to cause a ruckus.

So I appreciate getting to spend some time with you all.  We’ve spent a couple days out here, in Iowa, Missouri, and now back home, visiting with workers busy building our clean energy future, and families and small business owners trying to navigate a tough economy.

Because it’s folks like all of you, and towns like this one that give America its heartbeat.  It’s towns like this where working men and women built the American Dream with their bare hands.  And that dream is shared by every Illinoisan and every American – the chance to make a good living, raise a healthy and secure family, and give our kids opportunities we never had ourselves.

But times are tough in Quincy and towns like it across America.  Even though our economy is growing again; our markets are climbing again; and our businesses are beginning to create jobs again; lots of folks don’t feel any recovery in their own lives.  I’ve heard their stories across this country.  I’ve read them in the letters I get each night.  Many of them worry that the dream is slipping out of their reach.  Many felt that way even before the economic storm of the past two years.  Folks were living up to their responsibilities the best they could, but found themselves hurting in ways they never expected because folks in Washington and Wall Street weren’t living up to theirs.

That’s why I asked to be your President.  And that’s why so many of you joined our campaign.  Because you believed we had it within our power to change that.  You believed we could solve the problems that had been holding us back year after year, and focus on working Americans for once.  You believed we could keep the American Dream alive in our time, and for all time.  And that’s what I want to talk about today.

When I took office, we were in the midst of an historic financial crisis brought on by reckless and irresponsible speculation on Wall Street.  That in turn led to a recession that hammered Main Streets across America with lost jobs, lost homes, lost businesses, and downscaled dreams.

The first thing we had to do was mount an aggressive response – and that required some tough steps to stabilize the financial sector that were as necessary as they were unpopular.  But we took them, because the well-being of millions of Americans depended on it.  It was the right thing – the only thing – to do.

We took immediate steps to help the American people get back on their feet.  We aimed tax relief right at the middle class and the cornerstones of the American Dream, to make them whole again.  We cut taxes for small businesses; for first-time homebuyers; for students and parents paying for college; for 95 percent of America’s working families.  We extended unemployment benefits and made COBRA cheaper for folks who lost their jobs.  We helped states avert massive layoffs of hundreds of thousands of teachers and police officers.

We did what it took to rescue our economy and spark its recovery.  And that work goes on.  But it’s also time to rebuild our economy on a new foundation for real, sustained growth.  It’s time to extend opportunity to every Main Street in America so that young folks never have to feel like the only place to find it is somewhere else.  It’s time to create conditions so that Americans who work hard can gain ground again.  That’s what’s at the heart of all our efforts.

It’s why we made the biggest investment in clean energy in our history, creating good jobs in Middle America that harness the wind and sun and biofuels and won’t be shipped away.

It’s why we took on the special interests and reformed the student loan system so it works for students, not bankers.  That saved tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.  And we’re reinvesting that money in making college more affordable, and in upgrading America’s community colleges, so that more middle class Americans can get ahead in the 21st century.

It’s why we finally passed health reform in America – reform that will begin to end some of the worst practices of the insurance industry this year. In a few years, millions of families and small business owners will have more choice, more competition, and finally be able to purchase quality, affordable care and the security and peace of mind that come with it.  And over the next two decades, this reform will reduce our deficit by more than $1 trillion dollars.

And it is why we need good, commonsense Wall Street reform today.  Not next year; not some other time down the road.  Now.  Let me tell you why that’s important for you.

The crisis we’ve come through together wasn’t part of any normal economic cycle.  It began because some on Wall Street took irresponsible risks, making bets that produced big profits and big bonuses, but were built on bad mortgages.

And because we didn’t have commonsense rules in place, those irresponsible practices came perilously close to bringing down our entire economy and millions of dreams along with it.  We had a system where some on Wall Street could take wild risks without fear of failure, because they could keep the profits and you had to cover their losses.  Heads, they win – tails, you lose.

They failed to consider that behind every dollar they traded or leveraged like Monopoly money, there was a family out here on Main Street looking to buy a house, pay for college, open a business, or save for retirement.  That might work just fine for them, but as we’ve all learned all so clearly; it doesn’t work fine for our country.  And it’s got to change.

Now, we’re not doing this to punish these firms or begrudge success that’s fairly earned.  We don’t want to stop them from fulfilling their responsibility to help grow our economy.  As I’ve said many times, including just last week when I went to Wall Street; I believe in the power of the free market.  I believe in a strong financial system.  When they are working right, financial institutions help make it possible for families to buy homes, businesses to grow, and ideas to take flight.  There are a lot of good people in the financial industry who do things the right way, and it’s in our best interest when their firms are strong and healthy.

But when these institutions operate irresponsibly, they not only threaten themselves; they threaten the whole economy, along with the dreams that millions of Americans worked so hard to build.  And we just want them to operate in a way that’s fair, honest, and in the open, so that we never have to endure a crisis like this again.  We need to make sure our financial system doesn’t just work for Wall Street, but Main Street, too.

So let me lay out what this reform should look like.

First – and I know this is as important to you as it is to me – we will make sure the American taxpayer is never again on the hook when a Wall Street firm fails.  Never again.  That’s what this reform does.  And yet, some cynically and absurdly claim the opposite: that somehow, this bill institutionalizes bailouts.  That’s just false.  The fact is this: a vote for reform is a vote to end taxpayer-funded bailouts once and for all.  If a crisis like this happens again, financial firms will foot the bill.

Second, we’ll close the loopholes that allowed derivatives deals so large and risky they could threaten our entire economy.  And we’ll bring those deals out of the dark alleys of our financial system and into the light of day.

Third, this reform would give you more power by putting in place the strongest consumer financial protections in history.  This crisis wasn’t solely the result of decisions made on Wall Street.  It was also the result of decisions made on Main Street by folks who took on mortgages and credit cards and auto loans. Some took on obligations they knew they couldn’t afford. But millions of others were deceived or misled by shifting terms, confusing conditions, and forests of fine print.  Now, some argue that arming consumers with clear and concise information will somehow stifle competition.  I believe the opposite.  Instead of competing to see who can offer the most confusing product, companies should compete the old-fashioned way: by offering the best product.

Finally, we’ll give the people who own these companies – investors, pension holders, and shareholders like many of you – more of a say in the way they’re run.  At some of these firms, exorbitant salaries and bonuses actually created perverse incentives that encouraged folks to take reckless risks.  Well, if you own stock in these companies, you’ll get some say about that.  You’ll get to help decide how their managers are paid.

So that’s the reform we’ve put forward.  Accountability – no more bailouts.  Closing loopholes – no more trading in the shadows.  Consumer protections – no more deceptive products.  A say on pay – giving shareholders a more powerful voice.  That’s what we’re trying to do.

Now, I don’t believe this should be a partisan issue.  Everybody – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – were hurt by this crisis.  And everybody should want to fix it.  So I’m pleased that after a few days of delay, it appears that an agreement may be in hand to allow this debate to move forward on the Senate floor on this critical issue.  And I want to work with anyone, Republican or Democrat, who wants to pursue these reforms in good faith.  But we are going to get this done.  We’re going to get it done because you demand it.

It’s been two years since the crisis born on Wall Street slammed into Main Street with its full fury.  And while things aren’t nearly back to normal yet out here, they’re getting back to normal pretty quick up there.  Some in Washington may think this debate is moving too fast.  I don’t.  I’ve been calling for better rules on Wall Street since 2007.  And I certainly don’t think you would accuse Washington of moving too fast, either.

I don’t think you should have to wait one more day for protection from some of the practices that got us into this mess.  And we can’t let the recovery that’s finally beginning to take hold to fall prey to a new round of recklessness on Wall Street.  If we don’t learn the lessons of this crisis, we doom ourselves to repeat it.  And I refuse to let that happen.  The time for reform is now.

Through all the noise and lobbyists and partisanship, this debate comes down to a simple choice:  Are we going to keep going down the same road, where the irresponsibility of a few can put millions of families at risk and stick taxpayers with the tab – or are we going to protect consumers, strengthen our financial system, and put rules in place to keep this from happening ever again?  Are we going to give in to the special interests, or are we going to score another victory for the American people?  Are we going to stick with the status quo that failed us so profoundly, or are we going to remember that we have the power to do something about it?

The will to act.  That’s all it comes down to, Illinois.  I still believe we can come together and make this happen.  Because we are not powerless in the face of our challenges.  We do not quit when things get tough.  We come together.  We move forward.  We act.  We are Americans.  Our destiny is not written for us – it is written by us.  And if we remember that; if we summon that spirit and that resolve once again, we can strengthen our economy today and tomorrow.  We can restore some security for the middle class.  And we can renew the American Dream for families on Main Street all across this country we love.

Thank you very much, Illinois.  God Bless You.  And God Bless the United States of America.

President Obama begins Midwest Tour with stop in Iowa

Bookmark and Share

Fort Madison, Ia. – President Barack Obama arrived at the Siemens Energy plant at around 12:34 p.m. where he was introduced with some of the company’s executives.

Groups of employees were waiting for the President’s arrival and were introduced to him within minutes of his arrival.

“Hello everybody,” Obama said has he met one of the first groups.

Groups of employees consisting of a dozen or fewer people explained their jobs and shared with the president some personal details such as how long they have worked at the plant.

At one point the President felt a fiberglass material used in production of wind blades and told workers that “if my current gig doesn’t work out” that he would have more job options.

The workers chuckled.

At another point during the roughly 30-minute tour a reporter asked Obama why he chose to come to Iowa.  Obama, who was still in the midst of learning more about the plant, simply responded: “Because I love Iowa.”

At another point during the tour Obama spoke with plant manager Robert Gjuraj. Gjuraj could be heard explaining the importance of tax incentives that has helped the company expand and be competitive in the renewable energy industry.

Obama concluded his tour and spoke with a crowd of more than 300 people – mostly employees of the plant – at around 1:07 p.m.

Kelly calls on Rutherford to donate tainted Goldman Sachs cash
Rutherford should follow Congressman Kirk’s example

Democratic nominee for Illinois State Treasurer Robin Kelly called on Republican opponent Dan Rutherford to give back political campaign contributions he pocketed from a Goldman Sachs executive in wake of the fraud scandal that has rocked the Wall Street firm.

Rutherford has accepted $75,000 in campaign donations from Muneer Satter, a managing director of the firm’s private equity investments. Goldman is accused of defrauding investors of more than $1 billion.

“The greedy ways of this elite Wall Street behemoth led to our financial crisis and double-digit unemployment while executives lined their pockets with outrageous bonuses, thanks to taxpayer-funded bailout money,” Kelly said. “I’m calling on my opponent to donate this dirty money to charity and vow not to accept it in the future.”

Kelly is asking that Rutherford follow the lead of fellow Congressman Mark Kirk, U.S. Senate candidate and standard-bearer of the Illinois Republican Party, who just last week announced that he would return the money he received from Goldman employees.

Specifically, Kirk said he would give back his Senate campaign contributions, stating: "I want to set an example of ethics for others to follow."

Will Rutherford, who sits on the Illinois Senate’s Financial Institutions Committee, follow Kirk’s lead and avoid a conflict of interest? Will Rutherford do what is ethically right by donating the dirty money or will he side with a Wall Street titan accused of corrupt activity and against Illinois families?

“After all the pay-to-play abuses by Illinois politicians in recent years, we cannot risk electing a Treasurer who will be beholden to firms that accepted federal bailouts and fought against financial reform and hardworking Americans,” Kelly said.

According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Goldman Sachs defrauded investors of billions of dollars in a shady scheme involving a hedge fund operator who profited from their demise by betting the housing market would tank. The SEC is now suing Goldman Sachs, claiming it misled investors by selling them a mortgage-backed security without telling them that the instrument was designed to fail.

Call in the National Guard to fight street and drug gang violence in Chicago

Bookmark and Share

Why I like Fritchey’s plan to call in the National Guard
By Ray Hanania

Street gang and drug gang related violence is out of control in Chicago. Something needs to be done.

The Chicago Police are overworked, and oftentimes because of political agitation and bad publicity – the CPD needs to do a better job of PR but they don’t – the neighborhoods where the crime is committed do not cooperate.

Although the murder rates have dropped in recent years from the highs of what they were a decade ago – as many as 660 murders in one year, maybe a third now – Chicago is still losing great young minds to needless violence by teenagers who are lost and career criminals who rule the streets and communities.

Most of the street gang violence is concentrated in about 9 percent of the city’s neighborhoods, according to published reports. That means we know where most of the violence takes place. The question for Police Supt. Jodi Weis, a good person with an impossible job, is why? Why can’t we crack down on these criminals.

State Representatives John Fritchey of the North Side and LaShawn Ford of the West Side have proposed this past week that the Illinois National Guard be called in to help patrol these neighborhoods.

That’s a great idea. I’ll tell you why. Sometimes the problem is perception. And the perception today is the Chicago Police can’t do the job themselves in curbing the violence in this most difficult of neighborhoods.

Young people are dying, usually innocent bystanders. The Fritchey and Ford proposal does several things to change those perceptions and, more importantly, make a difference:

First, bringing in the National Guard reinforces the confidence of the public in the neighborhoods, to give them more strength to stand up and fight back. That’s been a big problem. Many living in this crime infested neighborhoods rightly fear speaking out. They need support.

Second, the idea sends out a strong message to the street gangs there’s going to be zero tolerance for street gang and drug related violence and people with guns.

Why don’t we start treating street gang and drug gang members who carry weapons the same way we treat terrorists. Put them in camps and deny them their rights. Round them up and punish them. Force them to change their lives by forcing them to live in tough and brutal conditions.

Maybe there are some who can be saved if we can take them off the streets.

Third, and most importantly, it shows the world and especially the neighborhoods where these murders have taken place that someone cares. Maybe this will encourage more parents and homeowners in these crime infested areas to feel confidence that speaking out will make a difference, not result in retribution against them by the drug and street gang thugs.

Finally, calling out the Illinois National Guard to step in and help also sends a message to those people who think that street gang and drug gang are the problems of other neighborhoods. They are not. The Fritchey and Ford proposal will help makes those people living in more comfortable neighborhoods and the suburbs more aware of the problem and maybe they will start to think about ways we can help.

It won’t be easy sending in the National Guard. There are going to be incidents we might not like.

But the reality is if we don’t do something, the streets of Chicago will continue to be ruled by street gang and drug gang thugs and killers who have so little respect for human life that innocent little children are dying every week.

[Note: John Fritchey joins Radio Chicagoland this morning (Monday April 26, 2010) at 9 am to discuss his proposal. Listen to WJJG 1530 AM Radio or live on the internet at www.RadioChicagoland.com.  And call in at 708-493-1530 if you have an idea, too.]

New Wave of Principals: New Wave of Issues
CPS undergoing shift in leadership, challenged with recruiting quality young leaders to improve schools

Chicago, April 16, 2010- With the old guard of principals retiring, Chicago Public Schools is challenged to find a way to recruit, support and, most importantly, keep the new wave of young principals, according to an analysis by Catalyst Chicago. Since 2000 many of the lowest-performing schools have had three or more different principals.

A National Louis-University professor and retired CPS principal, Carlos Azcoitia believes school improvement is unlikely with constant principal turnover. “If you have constant change with teachers and principals, then you won’t develop that community,” said Azcoitia.

Many new principals don’t plan to hold their position permanently—an attitude that is reshaping the process. A 2008 survey done by the National Association for Elementary School Principals found that only 38 percent of respondents saw that field as their “final occupational goal,” down from 58 percent in 1998.

This month Catalyst InDepth reports on Chicago’s principals and the pressure they face to improve performance in a district offering little job security and an ever tightening budget.

Giving it her all: In her job as principal of Orozco Elementary in Pilsen, Coralia Barraza serves many roles, including community leader.

Candidate pool shrinks: The CPS principal eligibility process adopted last year is so difficult that only a third of candidates are passing.

State raises the bar: Some leaders applaud proposed changes that would make it harder to get a principal certificate in Illinois, but universities worry about how to staff and fill their principal preparation programs.

Rob Sherman files multi-billion lawsuit against Illinois over misuse of grant funds

NEWS RELEASE
Thursday, April 8, 2010, 5:00 a.m.

Rob Sherman files $2.3 Billion
federal lawsuit against State of Illinois
Rob Sherman filed a federal lawsuit ( Complaint, Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C ), yesterday evening in the federal court in Springfield, to block $2.3 billion in Illinois grants from the $31 billion Capital Bill that was enacted into law last year. Sherman is challenging 176 grants on various constitutional grounds, but most of the challenges are for violating the separation of state and church.

The case is Sherman v. Quinn et al, Case Number 10-cv-03086 in the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, located in Springfield. The case was filed in Springfield because that's the location of the offices of the State officials who administer and pay the grants.

Most of the grants challenged by Sherman, Illinois' leading atheist, go to religious organizations -- houses of worship, parochial schools and religious ministries. Clear, unambiguous language in Article X, Section 3, of the Illinois Constitution says that no grant of money shall ever be made by the State to any church for any purpose. Article X, Section 3, also strictly prohibits public funds from ever being used to help support any parochial school. In addition, Article I, Section 3, of the Illinois Constitution provides that no person shall be required to support any ministry against his consent.

Grants to houses of worship that are being challenged in this lawsuit include $150,000 for Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam Temple in Chicago. The Nation of Islam is best known for advocating the hatred of white people.

Grants to parochial schools that are being challenged include $500,000 for a new school building for Christ the King Jesuit College Prep (Roman Catholic high school) in Chicago. The sponsor of this grant of tax dollars, State Representative LaShawn Ford, is on the Board of Trustees of Christ the King College Prep.
Grants to religious ministries that are being challenged include $35,000 to the Hillel Foundation at Northwestern University, whose mission is "to inspire every Jewish student to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life."

As you can see, Sherman is not just picking on one faith.

The lawsuit was filed by Richard Whitney of Carbondale, one of Rob Sherman Advocacy's many civil rights attorneys. Whitney is also the candidate for Governor of the Illinois Green Party. Sherman is the Green Party Wheeling Township Committeeman in Cook County.

The largest single grant being challenged is for $2.23 billion to Governor Pat Quinn, who is one of the three Defendants in the lawsuit. The grant allows the Governor to essentially play Santa Claus and give the money to pretty much anybody or any organization that he wants. This grant violates Article VIII, Section 2(b), of the Illinois Constitution, which says, in pertinent part, that "The General Assembly by law shall make appropriations for all expenditures of public funds by the State."

"By law" means that the General Assembly is required to pass a law that stipulates what the specific purpose is for how the money will be spent, and what organization will receive the money for that purpose; for each and every expenditure of public funds. That appropriations process has numerous checks and balances, such as:

• a legislator in each house of the General Assembly who must sponsor the expenditure;
• committee hearings that permit public input from proponents and opponents in both houses of the legislature;
• votes by committees in both houses of the General Assembly, where the expenditure must be approved to get out of committee;
• votes by the full membership of both houses of the legislature, on each expenditure; and then
• final approval by the Governor.

These multiple procedures are supposed to ensure that public funds are spent prudently and in a constitutionally permissible manner. The Illinois Constitution does not give the General Assembly the power to waive their part of the process and delegate full appropriations authority solely to the Governor.
Since when is Pat Quinn the King of Illinois? If Pat Quinn were to be allowed unilateral authority to make spending decisions on billions of dollars of public funds, spending decisions could be done with none of the checks and balances established by the Constitution to ensure that public funds are spent prudently and in a manner that is permitted by the Constitution. Article VIII, Section 2(b), was put in the Constitution specifically to prevent the kind of spending authority by the Governor that is being challenged by Sherman.

Perhaps, however, that's exactly what the General Assembly had in mind. The only way to sneak through imprudent or unconstitutional expenditures without being noticed is to do it in secret. The way to do it in secret is to have the King do it in a process that has no public hearings, no public input nor any public oversight, whatsoever, and does not give the public the opportunity to object until after the money has already been spent and it's too late to change anything.

The other two Defendants are Warren Ribley, the Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity ("DECO"), and Dan Hynes, the Illinois State Comptroller. Mr. Ribley is named because DCEO is the agency that writes and administers the grant agreements between the State (the "Grantor") and the organizations that are the recipients (the "Grantees"). Mr. Hynes is named because the State Comptroller cuts the checks to pay the grants.

Some of the grants that Sherman is challenging go to organizations that have a policy of "No atheists allowed." These grants include $100,000 to the Boy Scouts in Rockford and $200,000 to the Free Masons (Masonic Lodge) in Springfield.

Several challenged grants go to subsidize the cost of operating private news publications that offer partisan views and advocacy editorials on the subjects that they write about. These grants include $600,000 to N'DIGO in Chicago. This constitutional challenge questions whether the First Amendment "Freedom of Speech" clause is violated by requiring one set of taxpayers to financially underwrite the expressions of opinion by another set of taxpayers.

Several challenged grants go to subsidize the cost of infrastructure improvements on private property. These grants include $50,000 to the private, gated community of Candlewood Lake, which is located 9 miles south of the Wisconsin state line in the center of Boone County (the next county west of McHenry County). This constitutional challenge questions whether such a grant violates Article VIII, Section 1(a), of the Illinois Constitution, which says, in pertinent part, that "Public funds shall be used only for public purposes." At issue is whether Article VIII, Section 1(a), of the Illinois Constitution, is violated when taxpayers are stuck with paying for the cost of improvements on private property, and then told that they can't enjoy the use of the private property that they were just forced to pay to improve.

The Honorable Jeanne E. Scott is the Judge to whom the case has been assigned. Judge Scott is a Clinton appointee who graduated from Bradley University in Peoria and got her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago.

According to Whitney, the first appearance or hearing in court on this case will probably be in about two weeks.
